MARCHEGG – Königsstadt und Auenwildnis
Historical sites
Description
The historically significant Marchegg Castle was once built as part of the town fortifications by King Ottokar II of Bohemia. The remains of the 8-metre-high town walls, medieval gates and towers can still be admired today.
Right next to the idyllic castle park is the nature reserve "Untere Marchauen", which is home to the largest colony of white storks breeding in trees in Central Europe. The Storchenhaus Marchegg is the information center for nature tourism in the March floodplains, where trained guides will lead you through nature.
In 2022, the newly renovated Marchegg Castle hosted the Lower Austrian provincial exhibition "MARCHFELD Secrets", which offered an exciting journey through the history of the Marchfeld region. In 2023, visitors can take a look behind the scenes of the castle renovation for the first time. The new exhibition "750 years of castle history" starts on May 13.
Marchegg offers the whole family the perfect conditions for an exciting journey through history. A tip: Listen to interesting stories about the old royal town and its fascinating nature on a leisurely walk through Marchegg.
