Description

Experience the natural jewel Marchauen

Welcome to the Marchauen nature reserve!

All but a small part of the Lower Marchauen nature reserve is located in the floodplain of the March between the municipalities of Marchegg and Zwerndorf. In addition to near-natural riparian forests, the 1,200-hectare nature reserve is characterized by a variety of meadows and water meadows.

The original "Herrschaftsau" of the Palffy family was designated as the Lower Marchauen nature reserve in 1973. Since then, the WWF has managed it as a model farm for sustainable forestry and agriculture. Eyrie protection zones and natural forest reserves form core zones where nature is left to its own devices.

The biggest attraction of the March floodplains is the white stork colony at Marchegg Castle. First mentioned in documents in 1890, it now comprises up to 40 nests. The original nesting site on old oak trees is unique in Central Europe. Master Adebar now feels at home not only on the old oaks, but also on the chimneys of the castle. The storks of the reserve use the extensive meadows on both sides of the Morava, on the Austrian and Slovakian side, to forage. Occasionally, the shy black stork circles over the alluvial forest. Just like the black kite or the important gray heron colony, it is one of the treasures of the nature reserve.

A paradise for walking and hiking:

Hike on designated visitor trails through the primeval alluvial forest of the March or linger on specially constructed platforms to watch Master Adebar at his daily work. The huts along the trails invite you to take a break in the middle of the habitat of beavers, kingfishers and fire-bellied toads. With a bit of luck, you may come across a herd of Konik horses. This primitive breed of horse lives in the floodplain reserve all year round and is perfectly adapted to life in the wild. Thank you for treating these wonderful animals with respect and do not feed them.
