ZÁMOK NIEDERWEIDEN

Popis

Private gem of Prince Eugene of Savoy

Around 1693, Ernst Rüdiger Count von Starhemberg commissioned Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to design a small hunting lodge. Prince Eugene of Savoy acquired Niederweiden Castle in 1726 and had a spacious garden laid out to the east of the castle. This rococo garden already shows the change in garden design: while the Schloss Hof garden still shows the strict symmetry of the Baroque period, here the playful irregularity is the most important design principle.

Redesign under Maria Theresa

Maria Theresa acquired Niederweiden Palace and Schloss Hof from the heirs of Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1755 and gave them to her husband as a gift. In 1765, Maria Theresa commissioned Nikolaus von Pacassi to redesign the palace. The oval hall with its new domed ceiling was given illusionistic wall paintings by Jean-Baptiste Pillement with exotic plants, birds and oriental-style musicians.

Niederweiden Castle will remain closed in 2026 due to renovation work. Schloss Hof will remain open 364 days a year and will be showing the new special exhibition "Playful Symmetry - The Baroque Garden as a Work of Art" from March 7 to November 2, 2026.
