Description
A river landscape on the Danube that is unique in Central Europe has been protected by the Donau-Auen National Park since 1996. This pristine landscape is a protected area and refuge for rare species.
The schlossORTH National Park Center offers new perspectives and comprehensive information as the first point of contact for visitors to the national park. As the "gateway to the floodplain", it opens up the world of the national park. A new permanent exhibition will open in 2026.
The National Park Lounge invites you to take a break and the castle's tournament courtyard is the meeting point for guided tours.
In addition to the changing exhibitions in the observation tower, wild animals that live in or near the castle are presented on the upper floors: White storks, jackdaws, kestrels and several species of bat. Monitors even provide a live view of nesting boxes and nests.
The tourist information center provides expert advice about the national park and the region. Guests can find a large selection of "Au to go" in the national park store. Events for young and old, family festivals and a summer vacation program complete the offer at the schlossORTH National Park Centre.
The floodplain in miniature
The castle island is the floodplain experience area in the schlossORTH National Park Center. Here you can experience the region's habitats, animals and plants on a tour. Squirrels, European pond turtles and characteristic snake species can be observed in enclosures. Amphibians and insects have settled here. Rare aquatic plants, wild flowers, shrubs, dry grassland plants and impressive trees thrive. As the centerpiece of the castle island, the underwater observation station offers unique views into a body of water, like a dive - numerous native fish frolic in front of the glass panes. Barrier-free information elements and facilities for younger guests to play and join in complete the offer. The castle island can be visited individually and guided tours can be booked for groups.
