Sandberg at Devínska Kobyla
Unique relic …
On the western slopes of Devínska Kobyla, not far from Devínska Nová Ves, is a fascinating sandberg, that can be marvelled at from the hiking paths.
The sandberg is a unique relic of the Baden tertiary sea which extended to here 15 million years ago. Over 350 types of fossils have been found here, including shark teeth, whale skeletons, the remains of proboscidean species and ape bones. Among the most precious finds is a set of Dryopithecus teeth.
Hike to the Sandberg
For safety reasons and to preserve the natural area, the unstable terrain is not to be used. But the views to the sandberg from the hiking trail which proceeds from Waitov lom quarry and to Devín, is really lovely. Along the hiking path ancient Slavic fortifications can be seen too.
