The March

A river between the two regions

The natural border between Marchfeld and the neighbouring region of Záhorie in Slovakia forms the March. The tributary river of the Danube characterises the regions in both countries.

The March, a left tributary of the Danube, has its source in the Snieznik Mountains on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic and flows into the Devín Gate near Devín in the Danube region. Lined by alluvial forests, meadows and pastures which are often flooded for weeks, the March meanders through the landscape as a boundary river between Marchfeld and Záhorie.

Dynamic river with crossing options

The many loops of the March and its courses have changed in the course of time. As a result of erosion and sludge deposition, abandoned river courses were able to detach, with new branches of the river emerging.

Five crossings make it possible to move between different countries:

  • Bridge at Hohenau/March
  • Ferry at Angern/March
  • Marchegg cycle bridge
  • Schloss Hof cycle bridge
  • Marchegg railway bridge
