Ruins steeped in history: Perfect for an excursion!

Devín Castle is a ruin that sits in an elevated position on an impressive fortress complex on a rocky massif. The castle, and the enchanting landscape that surrounds it, as well as the breath-taking views, guarantees an unforgettable excursion.

Devín has a key role to play in Slovakian history. It is here that evidence of the first settlements of the land were found. Even millennia ago, the good strategic position meant that the castle was heavily contested. Celts, Romans and Slavs settled here, and for centuries the castle was seen as the western border of the Hungarian Empire. Numerous conquests characterise the history of the castle, which was destroyed in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars.

Views meet exhibition

Along with breath-taking insights and views into the distance, within the rooms in the castle rocks a exhibition themed 'Devín Castle from the 13th to the 20th century' has been set up. Using archaeological finds, the phases of the castle construction are clearly outlined and presented.

Confluence of the March and the Danube

At the foot of the rocky massif, at the so-called Devín Gate, the March and the Danube merge. Here too is where the memorial 'Gateway to Freedom' is located, which is dedicated to those who suffered under the Iron Curtain.
