Marchegg: Kultur- und Naturjuwel

Welcome to the stork town! The stork town enchants with its historical flair and invites the whole family to discover it.

Welcome to the stork city!

...the main venue for the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition 2022:

Marchegg in the district of Gänserndorf is home to the largest tree-breeding white stork colony in Central Europe. And the Weinviertel municipality is also particularly eventful away from its fascinating - and worthy of protection - friend Adebar.

It was built - including the famous castle - before 1268 by King Ottokar II of Bohemia, the ruler of Austria at the time. The medieval town wall and 2 town gates have largely been preserved and can be explored on the "Historic Circular Trail" and now also with an audio guide "Orstsspaziergang".

Marchegg's visitor magnets include the magnificent and newly renovated castle, the local history museum, the impressive, centrally located parish church of St. Margaretha and the surrounding floodplain, which is divided into designated nature and landscape conservation areas. Marchegg Castle will reopen in new splendor on 26.3.2022 for the Lower Austrian provincial exhibition "MARCHFELD Secrets - Man.Culture.Nature." The Storchenhaus Marchegg has moved into the castle and offers a variety of products and regional delicacies in the new store. The guides at the Storchenhaus will lead you to the secrets of Adebar, Ottokar and Co.

Tip: Marchegg town walk - royal town and stork paradise. Under the motto "Small places - big stories", the 3.2 km walk takes you past the castle, through the town and along the River March. The free app with audio stories, photos and illustrations brings the tour to life.

On the trail of the Marchfeld secrets:

A region full of stories and secrets: People left their traces in the Marchfeld as long as 30,000 years ago. Nestled between the metropolises of Vienna and Bratislava, this region is unique in Europe in terms of its facets and diversity. And even though it may seem familiar, the Marchfeld holds many unknowns. The treasure chest full of "Marchfeld secrets" is opened in the exhibition in the baroque Marchegg Castle - an experience for the whole family!

Marchfeld's realm of castles: Marchegg Castle

Young and adult visitors alike are thrilled by the beautiful castles to be discovered in the Marchfeld region. Around Marchegg, the Stork House provides interesting facts about Master Adebar, selected nature observation points in the region and reveals a secret or two on a guided walk through the town. Above this is the local history museum in the castle grounds. Discover long-forgotten things and take a stroll through Marchegg's cultural and town history! A historical journey through history awaits you in the former toll house in Marchegg Castle Park. Immerse yourself in the authentically furnished "Old House" in the life and everyday life of yesteryear. What crafts were practised in the past and how did this change in the course of industrialization? Find out more about the founding of the town of Marchegg by King Ottokar II (1268) up to the last manorial owners, the Palffys.

Other magnificent buildings worth seeing are in the immediate vicinity: the feudal Hof Palace - once Prince Eugene's country residence and today a family highlight with show gardens, many animals and exciting exhibitions - as well as Niederweiden Palace, the former hunting lodge of Prince Eugene and Maria Theresa. Eckartsau Castle and Orth Castle with its National Park Center are also worth a visit in the Marchfelder Schösserreich.

Natural jewel Marchauen: Off to the realm of the storks!

Marchegg is home to the largest colony of white storks nesting in trees in Central Europe. The "Adebar family" makes itself at home in the old trees of the "Untere Marchauen" nature reserve managed by the WWF. This is where the storks raise their offspring. From the end of March to mid-August, you can watch Master Adebar at his daily work.

Hike along designated visitor trails through the pristine alluvial forest of the March or linger on specially constructed platforms to observe nature. The huts along the trails invite you to take a break in the midst of the habitat of beavers, kingfishers and fire-bellied toads. With a bit of luck, you may also come across a herd of Konik horses. This primitive and robust breed of horse lives in the floodplain reserve all year round and is perfectly adapted to life in the wild. Thank you for treating these wonderful animals with respect and do not feed them.
