Weiden an der March

The Weinviertel municipality of Weiden an der March in the district of Gänserndorf is located in the eastern Marchfeld - on the border with Slovakia. It consists of the three cadastral communities of Baumgarten an der March, Oberweiden and Zwerndorf. Finds from the Upper Palaeolithic period and two Hallstatt burial mounds bear witness to earlier settlements in ancient times.

Weiden an der March is known above all for its extensive nature reserves. There are also beautiful historic buildings to discover. The 300-metre-long wine cellar lane in Baumgarten an der March is home to 15 romantically dilapidated cellars. The tranquil landscape invites you to enjoy hiking and cycling. Visitors can fortify themselves in the popular Weydner Wirtshaus - a piece of tavern tradition in the middle of the Marchfeld.

Weiden an der March: important nature reserves at a glance

Endangered plant species thrive in the sand hills of Oberweiden. The "walkable" alluvial forests in Zwerndorf and Baumgarten - with the Marchauen nature reserve - invite you to explore. There is also the Baumgarten salt steppe nature reserve. Several municipal areas are also designated as bird sanctuaries.

Historical sights in Weiden

The branch church of St. Mark in Baumgarten dates back to the late 13th century. In Oberweiden, there is the parish church of St. Leopold from the 14th century, which has a Gothic core, and the listed vicarage from 1742. In Oberweiden, there is also a war memorial commemorating the fallen soldiers from the two world wars.

The parish church of St. Pankraz in Zwerndorf is also worth a visit: even the defensive tower of the former fortified church has been preserved to this day.
