Border-crossing cycle adventure
Explore 2 countries by bike …
Austria and Slovakia, Marchfeld and Záhorie, landscapes on either side of the March. During a border-crossing cycle tour lots of impressions and unforgettable experiences await! Tip: don't forget your travel pass!
The wide, flat landscape of Marchfeld is wonderful for exploring by bike. You pass magnificent palaces and historic gems. Always in your luggage – a variety-packed landscape. Neighbouring Slovakia is also great for pedalling about.
Two cycle bridges link the two regions
You need to cross the March for your border-crossing cycling adventure and there are two cycle bridges available:
- The 'Fahrradbrücke der Freiheit' (freedom bridge) at Schloss Hof links the Austrian and Slovakian banks of the river. Cycle from the town of Engelhartstetten across this 550m bridge to Slovakia's Devínska Nová Ves. The bridge is in the precise location where in 1771 under Maria Theresia's reign, a bridge linking Austria and Slovakia was built.
- An additional, recently constructed pedestrian and cycle bridge was constructed at Marchegg, and now offers an additional opportunity to cross the March. Crossing the bridge named VysoMarch you get from Marchegg to Vysoká.
Iron Curtain Trail
The border-spanning cycle route Iron Curtain Trail, also known as EuroVelo 13, proceeds through the Green Belt area along the March. Closed for decades on account of the Iron Curtain, extensive sections have retained their natural features. The European long-distance cycle path proceeds right across Europe, taking in more than 10,000 km, from Finland to the Black Sea. The section of the route and stage between the regions of Marchfeld and Záhorie are perfectly suited to cyclists who want to immerse themselves in the inspiring landscape, combining nature & culture with sporty activity.
Route recommendations
The specific route recommendations which proceed along the existing cycle paths provide perfect opportunities to explore this border-spanning region by bike. There are various circular courses to choose from, in differing lengths. Depending on your fitness level, everyone will find a recommendation ideally suited to their needs.
